MY WORK

For my presentation, I spoke about age/generation and disability. This topic is an extremely broad topic to speak about. In this society, disability is talked about more and more. It has become an easier topic to speak about as time has progressed. Many people have come forward and have spoken about their disabilities making others feel comfortable about it. I felt comfortable speaking about my topic, as we split into groups, I was a bit nervous on what topic I might have gotten and would have had to elaborate on, but in all honesty, my group did great, and I got 2 comfortable topics to speak on. I really enjoyed doing this assignment as it related to real life issues from everyone’s point of view, some people had topics about communication, others had individualism, and some spoke about cultures. So, I happened to learn many different things through everyone’s topic, and presentations.  My topic was quite the short one (the book barely had any information regarding my topics) but I managed to put 3 slides together, so I would say I did a decent job. I wish I could have done a better job elaborating, but I don’t think I did to bad. Also, my group had tons of pictures as well as videos, we really went overboard in terms of showing visuals and other resources from the internet, which is a good thing that in turn led to a great slideshow with great productivity.

FIRST THOUGHTS

Working as a group was fun, it forced us to collaborate. When we first entered the class, we all made a WhatsApp group chat to exchange ideas and information. We all got along well, so the first part of the project which was to make the PowerPoint and assign roles to every individual subject came along quite well, in fact we got past the beginning stage fairly quickly, no issues whatsoever. Someone in our group (I don’t remember who) made a word document listing all the different chapters, all the way from 3.1 to 3.4 listing all of our names besides the lessons as well as chapters.

MY TOPICS/ WHAT I LEARNED

We were assigned to do research on our topic, doing research on my topic was awesome, I really enjoyed it due to how broad my topic was. My age/generation piece covered different and similar co-cultures and people’s identification within those certain cultures and years.  I also covered the great depression and how people born during this time frame tend to be frugal, then I went on to speak about how people who were born during WWII tend to value sacrifice for self and for cause and country, after this, I went on to speak about Baby Boomers who are likely to have a personality which questions the law and/or authority. After this, the textbook led me to talk about baby boomers, generation X and Gen Z. I found these topics very different and interesting, as I learned how the generation one is born in can really have conflicting ideas and or thoughts that can really get in the way of modern-day communications. I learned how different generational cultures interact differently, and how the different cultural orientations can increase tension and cause communication challenges. This happens due to different expectations and ideas about respect that can lead to cause communication challenges. I also incorporated tons of pictures and visual graph examples of the different generations as well as the different co-cultures. I then went on to speak about disabilities, my disability section I would say was very easy to speak on, as I am sure everyone knows a person who was a disability, whether it is a broken arm, leg, or any mental disability, it was a sad topic, but an easy one to elaborate on since I’ve had prior knowledge on certain disabilities and have done research of my own in the past. Just in case you are reading this and have no prior knowledge on disabilities, a disability is any physical, emotional, mental, or cognitive impairment that impacts how a person functions in society. (3-2H) Directly quoted that from the book.

MY CLASSMATES

My classmates did a great job explaining each other’s assigned topic, they elaborated very well and went into a great amount of considerable detail. They really showed the different topics in depth and went into a great amount of detail for us to all comprehend. I found that most of the teams split the work evenly and over working was not an issue heading into this project, everyone found the right balance of work. I found that some people did better than others in terms of presenting, I felt as if many people were nervous regarding the speaking and presenting part of this project, including myself. I was nervous not because of the presenting part, but rather because of my device giving me technological issues and Professor Sinkoff calling on me to present, I had to type in the meeting that I was having tech issues and had to forfeit the class then come back in to have my device working properly again.

GROUP COMMUNICATION

I would say communication between groups was the most important part of this project, as it was our first presentation and graded assignment, we all felt the pressure that was placed on us. If it wasn’t for us having the WhatsApp group chat, the whole thing would have been a great mess, and many of us would have certainly struggled to get the work done. Like I previously mentioned, my team and I split into groups assigned by the professor and really got together to collaborate on our individual topics, everything went really smooth, and we all split our work up evenly, this was a critical part of our project as we all felt happy with what we had to present.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

If I had to do it again, I definitely would! Working in groups is fun and a great way of interchanging ideas as well as giving others a helping hand. Great job class!
