First Presentation Experience (Fabienne Cadet )

Whenever someone hears the term “group work”, immediately there are feelings, emotions, and thoughts that bubble up. Personally, working with others is not one of my strong suits and I try to stay away from that as much as I can. Working on your own feels easier. It can be efficient, you can work on the project in your own time, and you can control the whole process. Letting go of control is what I struggle with.  However, at times it’s inevitable and regardless of personal feelings you have to do the work. To me working in a group enables you to examine topics from the perspectives of others. When you are required to discuss a topic and negotiate how to address it, you are forced to listen to other people’s ideas. Their ideas will then influence your own thinking and broaden your horizons. Being social significantly enhances learning . Not only do you have to hear others' perspectives, but you also have to compare, contrast and integrate their perspectives into you...

1st presentation Alfredo Olivera

MY WORK   For my presentation, I spoke about age/generation and disability. This topic is an extremely broad topic to speak about. In this society, disability is talked about more and more. It has become an easier topic to speak about as time has progressed. Many people have come forward and have spoken about their disabilities making others feel comfortable about it. I felt  comfortable speaking about my topic, as we split into groups, I was a bit nervous on what topic I might have gotten and would have had to elaborate on, but in all honesty, my group did great, and I got 2 comfortable topics to speak on. I really enjoyed doing this assignment as it related to real life issues from everyone’s point of view, some people had topics about communication, others had individualism, and some spoke about cultures. So, I happened to learn many different things through everyone’s topic, and presentations.     My topic was quite the short one (the book barely ha...

Briannette Gonzalez    January 28, 2022      To begin SPC 1017, our professor assigned a group project to the class based on different chapters. The class was divided into three different groups, one group per chapter, and we were in charge of collecting the required information to basically teach the chapter to our classmates. Each student had to create 2 or 3 powerpoint slides based on their assigned topic from the chapter and insert any information they thought was important. The groups were assigned chapters 3,9, and 10, and create a powerpoint based on their understanding. I think this was an amazing start to our SPC 1017 class because it gives everyone a chance to put in their own skills and knowledge to create a group presentation, and most importantly it gives the group time to get together and communicate altogether as a class group.     The first group was assigned chapter 3, lucky to say that in fact that was my group. Chapter 3 was ab...

My Experience      To start SPC1017 we were separated into 3 different groups and every group was assigned a chapter to do research on and learn about to topic and make a PowerPoint presentation. My group was assigned chapter 3 each group member had to create 2 or 3 slides on the topic they were assigned to do and put any information they thought was important such as pictures to describe something or a short YouTube video showing examples of the topic. The other two groups had chapter 9 and 10 and had to do the same thing as us but with the information their chapter gave. This was the first assignment for SPC1017 and I liked it because it showed that we were going to be doing a lot of group work that involved interesting topics. Even though my group did an amazing job and I am so proud of all of them for doing so well on the first assignment of the semester for this class I feel like I could have done a lot more. That's why I have to practice speech because I get nervous...

Presentation One Overall Experience

My overall experience working on this presentation was easy-going and great. This was quite shocking to me because I thought the process would be harder since it was a group project. Typically, I am not a fan of group projects because I don’t like the possibility other individuals may have on the outcome of my grade. I like to be in total control. In addition, when working with others you never know how their work ethic is so that also made me nervous. However, the group of individuals I worked with were all nice and did their part in a timely manner. I was in group one and our presentation was based on chapter three. Chapter three focuses on Intercultural Communication. We decided to each take certain parts of the chapter to read over. Everyone was able to choose the topic they preferred to work on. After we each had to summarize what our section of the chapter was about. The two sections I worked on were Uncertainty avoidance. Uncertainty avoidance is the extent to which people...

Blog 1 Homer from The Simpsons walking backwards into bushes. Group projects? Sign me up! Okay, that’s a lie; I hate group projects. There is something about having to depend on others for that I simply do not love. However, I am fully aware that it is essential in most, if not all, careers and it is better to start learning and getting comfortable with having to deal and look past differences with your teammates, peers, and colleagues. Now, I know I said I did not like school group projects but put me out on a soccer field or any sports environment for that matter and even if I suck at the sport, I will give it my all, mostly because of my teammates. So that is how I like to trick my brain into feeling better about group projects. I must say, this was a good one. Once my group got past splitting the chapter into sections, it was easy peasy lemon squeezy. Woman standing behind podium looking around anxiously asking if the microphone is on or if there even is a microphone. My Personal ...

My Experience SPC1017 - Blog Post 1

January 31st, 2022 Diego Morales  The Necessity of Group Work! SPC1017 is my speech class and so far I have had a pretty good experience with it so far.  However, there is group work to say the least 😟. I know what you're thinking because I thought the same way. "My grade depends on other people!" But nowadays, if you want to work on any major project in the work force, it requires for you to depend on a number of people throughout the project. Therefore, making this an essential no matter how much someone can dislike group work. You probably are doing group work daily already and aren't even realizing it just by collaborating with others. To add on to that, the best way of learning a skill is by teaching it yourself. By doing so you are forcing yourself to apply it and just get better and better the more you teach something. Humans putting a giant puzzle together to demonstrate teamwork. My Real World Experience With Group Work I may be a b...

Gabriela San Roman- Group Presentation

About the Chapter              Of all the groups formed my group focused on Chapter 3:  Intercultural Communication , which, according to the book, refers to interactions between people whose cultures are so different that communication between them is disrupted. Afterward, we looked at the interactions and relations between dominant and co-cultures.  Culture: Learned system of norms held by the majority group of empowered people in society. Co-culture: Group formed of a smaller number of people whose values, attitudes, beliefs, and customs differ from the dominant culture.  Once a person identifies their culture they developed something called cultural identity. This is the sense of self, people form based on the cultural groups with whom they closely align themselves. In other words, it's a part of self-concept based on how closely we associate with both the dominant culture and co-cultures. To have a better understanding we were given...
